Through the Coquitlam Munch program, visitors to the Austin Heights shopping area in Coquitlam can take home fruits, vegetables and herbs thanks to the public planters maintained by local Austin Heights businesses. Visitors are welcome to harvest small amounts for their own personal use. Remember to wash your harvest thoroughly before using!
The program started as a partnership between the Austin Heights Business Improvement Association and the City of Coquitlam in 2016 during the “Communities in Bloom” competition, which promotes community pride, beautification and environmental responsibility. The Austin Heights BIA carried on the Coquitlam Munch planters after the competition, partnering with the Coquitlam Farmers Market to provide lush, edible mini-gardens year after year.
Austin Heights businesses maintain 38 planters – each offering a selection of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers – with the goal of sparking conversation around food production and demonstrating how the public can grow their own food at home.
